LA Batteries
AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) has made the flooded batteries obsolete. The flooded cell is the type of RV battery ll that requires the owner to add water frequently. Some cells used in RV are LA batteries. LA has several cells connected to a series. Each of the cells generates roughly 2.1 volts. LA batteries are made of lead, plates, and lead oxide immersed in the electrolyte, which is 64 percent water, and 36% sulfuric acid.  

The amount of the electrolyte and the size of the lead plates are determinants of the amount of charge a LA cell can store. This being said, LA cells do not make electricity, but instead, they save electricity.

Useable Energy and Cost

It is commonly accepted that the most cost-effective and reasonable base of unloading (DOD) for this type of cell is 50%. For Li -iron-phosphate (LiFePO4 or LFP), which is the most stable of the mainstream Li-i cell types, 80% DOD is used.

To get 300 usable amp-hours capacity with this type of accumulator and have a reasonable life expectancy requires us to use 600 amp-hours of cells. It is widely known that the life expectancy of this type of accumulator severely drops off when unloading more than 50%. 

Let’s take two Victron 24V cell models and analyze useable current for a small yacht:

1 x Victron Li-i 24 V 180 Ah
The given voltage of the LFP cell is 3.3 V. This 26.4 V LFP cell consists of 8 cells attached in series with a 180 Ah rating. The usable current is 26.4 x 180 = 4. 75 kWh. Useable current is 26.4 x 180 x 0.80 = 3.8 kWh.

2 x Victron AGM 12 V 220 Ah
The given load of the L-acid cell is 2.0 V/cell. Each 12 V monobloc cell is composed of 6 cells connected in series with a 220 Ah rating. Combining 2 x 12 V 220 Ah cells in series to give 24V and 220 Ah, the usable current is 24.0 x 220 = 5.28 kWh. Useable current is 24 x 220 x 0.50 = 2.64 kWh.

This equation begs the question: What is the Ah rating of this type of accumulator that would be equivalent to the 3.8 kWh usable current of the Li-i cell? To get 3.8 kWh of usable current from this type of accumulator, it would need to be double the size to start with due to the 50% DOD market rule, i.e., 3.8 x 2 = 7.6 kWh.

At 24V, that would suggest 7,600/24, which gives us a cell assessment of 316.66 Ah, which moves closer to twice the rated potential of the Li-i 24 V 180 Ah. This does not mean, the aging of the cells, temperature derating, or higher loads for this type of batteries; higher loads have a more significant effect than on Lithium batteries. 

With all this data, it is reasonable to say that this type of accumulator will need to be double the Ah rating of a Li. What about the cost? Using the Victron cost list, we see that a 12V 220 Ah AGM is € 470 ex VAT or 2.136 €/ Ah. 

For 316.66 Ah, that is equivalent to € 676.50 at 12V or € 1,353 at 24 V. The 24V 180 Ah Li is € 4,704 for the same volume of usable current. Therefore, it is 4,704/1,353 = 3.48 times more costly (or less if we examine the part of 2 referred to above) when analyzing Ah ratings.

Based on this, you might conclude that Li is not cost-effective; however, usable current compared to the cost is only a part of a bigger picture.

Weight and Size

Since Lithium batteries do not contain the dense LA found in this type of accumulators, it makes it lighter. Given that their DOD (depth of charge) is 80 to 90%, its cell bank only occupies less space. Because of this reason, lithium batteries consume less weight and volume compared to this type of old accumulator.

Most Ah grades of cells, despite the type, are stipulated at a 20-hour rate. This was acceptable in the old days of light loads, but as the number of parts and the size of loads has increased over a while, we also need to look at high short term loads, medium, and longer-terms for different varieties of equipment. 

This might mean a considerable cell package. With a large package, as shown below, it becomes clear just how heavy LA compared to Li. 1360/336 it is four times heavier.
