Kanopolis State Park is the root of it all; it is the first state park in Kansas, but despite being the oldest, the variety of activities and attractions here never gets old! From its more or less 30 miles of hiking, biking, and horseback-riding trails, 3,500 acres of a water reservoir, to its 12,500-acre wildlife area, that would take your bore away!

If you are from Salina, KS, on I-135, you could take K-140 W for about 23 miles towards K-141, then you could take K-141 south for about 13 miles towards the park.

If you are from interstate I-135 near Lindsborg, KS, you could take K-4 W for about 20 miles towards K-141, then you could take K-141 north about 7 miles towards the park.

Aside from RV camping and ten trippings, it offers many recreational activities within its miles and acres of waterways, wood areas, and trails, where you could roam and explore with the whole family.

The state park is home to all bikers and hikers, with more or less 30 miles of tracks that would surely make you sweat. 

Based on the review, this area offers excellent trails snakes through the Smoky Hill Wildlife Area, ranging from easy ½mile of walks to multi-day treks. 

The area also offers the Horsethief loop, where you could hike through the canyons and trees, and to the (n) and (w), you could hike the Prairie trails and wander through the high prairie and Red Rock.

  •  Movie schedule – Sadly, you cannot make reservations or buy tickets in advance. Usually, movies are confirmed every Monday before the weekend. 
  • Rain and Snow: Even if it rains or shows, the movie should go on! Though it is an outdoor theatre, the weather would not hinder watching movies.

Reminder: Payment is non-refundable

  • Alcohol: They discourage the consumption of alcohol. Keep in mind that it is a DRIVE-in theater; of course, drunk driving is against the law.
  • Reminders: Their staff monitors the ground; if you ever get caught with alcohol, they would either ask you to throw it away or leave the place. If caught under the influence, whether it is alcohol or other substances, especially if you are under 21 years old, there would be a sheriff that would check on you.
  •  Pets (dogs): Unfortunately, you cannot bring pets in; they may interrupt the show or movie.
  • Lawn Chairs: You could bring lawn chairs, and you could set yourselves in front of your vehicles to not interrupt other vehicles. Do not forget to bring blankets and a radio to hear the movie’s sound.
  • Running Lights – Do not start your car or RV for daytime running lights during the movie. If you need to get warm, you could turn off your RV, then you could set your parking brake, and then you could start your vehicle like usual. (This could defeat the headlights from coming while your car is parked) 
  • Smoking: You could smoke, but you must be Inside your vehicles or in designated smoking areas only.
  • Leaving after the first movie: There’s an Intermission between movies so that you can leave after the first one.
  • Operating season: The drive-in theater opens on the first weekend of April and runs through mid-September but depends on attendance and availability of films or movies.
  • Payment method: They are accepting cash payments via credit and debit cards. However; Checks are not accepted.
  •  Scheduled time: The movie starts when the surrounding is dark enough to get the picture up on their 60-foot widescreen.
  •  Food and drinks: You could bring in food. However, you could not bring a grill and alcohol.

  1. Mushroom Rock State Park

Though it is the smallest park, It is one of the wonders of Kansas, Located on the Prairie Trail Scenic Byway (NW) part of KS for about 5 miles north of Kanopolis Lake and State Parks, more or less 3 miles (w) of K-141 on Avenue K, a county road canyon loop or south of K-140 from the Caneiro on 25th Road. 

It is a 5 acres type Standard electric site operated by Stream State Park. It might be small, but it offers beautiful and unique forms. 

Here you could notice a rock formation resembling a giant mushroom above the horizon; these Dakota rock formations are the remains of the sediments and beach sands during the Cretaceous Period 144 to 66 million years ago, measuring about 27 ft in diameter.
